The idea for cruise control struck Ralph Teetor during a car ride with his lawyer. As the lawyer drove, he constantly sped up and slowed down while engaging in conversation with Ralph. This inconsistent driving annoyed Ralph, prompting him to create a solution. Despite his blindness, Ralph was determined to design a device that could maintain a constant speed for vehicles.
The Invention and Development
Ralph Teetor’s relentless pursuit led to the invention of the technology he initially called the “Speedostat.” In 1950, he successfully patented this device. The Speedostat allowed drivers to set a desired speed, and the car would maintain it without requiring constant adjustments from the driver. This was a groundbreaking innovation at the time.
Adoption by Cadillac and Legacy
A few years after Ralph Teetor’s invention, Cadillac adopted the Speedostat and began incorporating it into their cars. They named it “cruise control,” a term that has stuck ever since. Ralph’s invention revolutionized the driving experience, making it more comfortable and efficient for countless drivers worldwide.
